Compare eHarmony and Match by free communication, matching style, subscription terms and the questions to ask before paying.

eHarmony vs Match comes down to how you want to start and what you need before paying. Match says free members can chat with their matches. eHarmony begins with a compatibility questionnaire, while its free Basic plan limits personalized messages and generally blurs photos. If free conversation after a match matters most, Match may be the more useful place to start; if a questionnaire-led approach appeals to you, consider eHarmony's limits and any offer you actually receive.
We reviewed public US sources on November 1, 2026. We did not create accounts, buy subscriptions or independently test matches. Features, prices, offers and the people available to you can change. Neither service guarantees a relationship.
eHarmony vs Match at a glance
| Question | eHarmony | Match |
|---|---|---|
| How do I start? | Complete a compatibility questionnaire and receive suggested matches, according to its US terms. | View recommended profiles; Match says free users can rate up to 50 a day in its Recommended stack. |
| Can I message for free? | Basic has limited personalized messaging. The public terms do not establish an unlimited free conversation. | Match says free members can chat with their matches; that does not mean every message to an unmatched person is free. |
| Can I see photos? | Basic photos are generally blurred, with possible exceptions. Photo access on Premium depends on the plan. | Check which photos and profiles your free account can actually view. |
| What changes when I pay? | Premium offers additional photo and communication access; some plans have limits on Match Unlocks. | Paid tiers add features, and Match lists search and advanced filters among Platinum benefits. |
| What should I check? | The full term, payment schedule, renewal and any remaining installments. | The full term, payment schedule, renewal, cancellation channel and any separate add-ons. |
The descriptions come from eHarmony's US terms and Match's package guide. They are provider statements, not an account test. Check the plan and features offered in your location.
How the two experiences begin
eHarmony's terms describe a compatibility questionnaire used to provide match recommendations. That may appeal if you like a structured introduction and are comfortable spending time on it. It does not establish that a suggested person will share your intentions or be a good fit for you.
Match describes a Recommended stack and says free users can rate up to 50 profiles a day there. Its paid tiers include additional features; for example, the package guide lists search and advanced filters under Platinum. Do not assume that every search control is free or that every tier includes the same filters.
Neither a questionnaire nor a profile can prove that someone wants the same kind of relationship you do. If you are comparing more services, our guide to dating apps for serious relationships looks at a broader set of formats.
Free messaging and photos: what is the difference?
Match: Its package guide says free members can chat with every match. If your first goal is to have a conversation after a mutual match, that is a useful feature to check before paying. It does not promise that someone will match or reply.
eHarmony: Its US terms describe limited personalized messages on Basic and say profile photos are generally blurred, although an unblurred primary photo may be available in some circumstances. Premium provides additional access, but the terms describe plan-specific features and Match Unlock limits. Check who you can contact and which photos your actual plan includes; do not assume every paid plan lets you contact every person without limit.
Our guide to what is free on eHarmony explains the Basic limits, and the eHarmony trial guide separates the ongoing free account from a temporary Premium promotion, if one is offered.
eHarmony vs Match cost: compare the same commitment
There is no dependable universal answer to which service is cheaper. As public reference points, the two US Apple App Store listings showed these items on November 1, 2026:
| Listing item | Displayed amount | What the label does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Match: 1 Month Basic | $44.99 | The label states one month. It does not establish the features or availability of your own offer. |
| eHarmony: PREMIUM light | $179.99 | The public list did not state a duration for that item, so it cannot be compared with the one-month Match item as a monthly price. |
Apple also listed a Match 6 Month Bundle at $129.99. The items may differ in features and availability; the listing is not a quote for your account or for a website or Android purchase. eHarmony's Apple list also contains paid items labeled “Basic.” That label alone does not establish that they are the same product as the free Basic membership described in eHarmony's terms.
Before comparing two offers, check that the term, features, purchase channel and date match. An advertised monthly equivalent can hide a longer commitment.
Hypothetical example: Offer A works out to $24 a month for six months, or $144 before tax. Offer B works out to $19 a month for twelve months, or $228 before tax. Offer B has a lower monthly equivalent but an initial commitment that is $84 higher. These are invented figures, not prices for either service. Check whether the actual total is due at once or in installments.

Renewal and cancellation are separate from the first price
Both companies describe automatic renewal in their public US materials. Before buying, note the renewal date, duration and price, the deadline for stopping renewal, and whether the website or an app store manages the purchase.
Match's cancellation guide distinguishes the main subscription from add-ons and directs Apple subscribers to Apple for subscription management. eHarmony's US terms say that, in some circumstances, installments for the current term can remain due even after renewal is canceled; the terms also describe exceptions and applicable rights. Check the offer and rules that apply to you, and keep the confirmation of any cancellation.
eHarmony vs Match for people over 50
There is no verified basis here for declaring one service better for everyone over 50. Start with the same practical questions: can you see enough information to decide whether someone interests you, can you communicate in the way you want, and does the actual subscription fit your budget?
Where free access allows, look at the profiles and preferences available to you in your area. eHarmony's Basic photo and messaging limits may affect what you can evaluate without paying; Match's free chat applies after a match. We did not independently measure the number, age or intentions of members in any location.
Match vs eHarmony: which should you try first?
- Choose the free action that matters. If matched conversation is your priority, check Match's current free option. If the questionnaire is the feature you want to explore, check what eHarmony Basic shows you.
- Look for a real fit. Review the profiles and settings available to you, while recognizing that free accounts may not expose every photo or filter.
- Compare actual offers. Use the same term and purchase channel where possible. Write down the total initial commitment, payment dates and renewal terms rather than only the monthly equivalent.
- Keep safety in the decision. Move at your own pace and be cautious if an online contact asks for money. The Federal Trade Commission's romance-scam guidance explains common warning signs.
You can try one service, decide that neither fits, or use another way to meet people. Paying for access is not evidence that every member has the same intentions or that a relationship will follow.
